Transforming People and Organizations Since 2003"This IRES course will introduce participants to the field of Communication for Development (C4D). C4D is an evidence-based process that utilizes a mix of communication tools, channels and approaches to facilitate participation and engagement with children, families, communities, and networks for positive social and behavior change in both development and humanitarian contexts. It draws on learnings and concepts from the social, behavioral and communication sciences. Communication technologies and approaches have evolved rapidly in the past decade and new opportunities for engaging people in social change processes have opened up. At the same time, factors such as changing demographics, globalization, armed conflicts, climate change, disease, pandemics and epidemics, movements of migrant and refugee populations, and rapid urbanization have posed new challenges and requirements for innovation in the development and communication sectors.
Improving smallholders' access to knowledge, networks, and institutions is crucial for their livelihoods. Rural areas, once isolated, now have the opportunity to benefit from ICTs in agriculture. This training program aims to support practitioners in understanding and implementing ICT interventions for agriculture.
Development actors in a country prioritize understanding the food security situation of the population. Analysts conduct various assessments to identify hungry and food insecure populations and determine the underlying causes. These assessments include CFSVAs, EFSA, and market analyses. Advanced technologies like satellite imagery, GIS, and mobile data collection platforms are used to collect, manage, and analyze data. The world food program and its partners are establishing FSMS for continuous monitoring of food security conditions and market prices.
All organizations rely on information to function, and without it, they would cease to operate. With technology and human threats constantly changing, trained security personnel are needed to protect information. Information is at risk from various sources, so it's crucial for security personnel to understand the risks and use countermeasures to secure it. Utilizing best practices and management techniques will mitigate risks and enhance protection. This course covers new developments in IT security, focusing on threats, compliance, strategic alignment, frameworks, policies, and integration of standards and metrics.
The Strategic Development Communications training combines skills workshops and lectures to provide participants with theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Experts from various fields guide participants in studying various communication building blocks, such as planning and executing communication strategies aligned with organizational goals. The program also includes an international mix of facilitators and practitioners. Campaign strategies available for selection include public relations, community mobilization, fundraising, media advocacy, and behavior change communication.
Data collection and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) have always been essential in development work. Information and communication technology (ICT) tools like mobile phones and tablets, digital survey apps, and real-time data uploading software have simplified remote data collection and M&E challenges.
Land surveyors, geodesists, engineers, earth research scientists, and cartographers from African countries with prior experience in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technologies are eligible to participate.
