Its focus was not shared by its publisher, Baird, who preferred Real Detective and Mystery Stories. The magazine featured excellent supernatural and sci-fi stories, including H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic horror tales. Another publisher created a sports fiction pulp while a financially struggling one started the chilling stories magazine. Epperly, an Art Institute of Chicago student, is now widely represented in public and private collections.
